When thinking about locations for your San Antonio photography session, here are some things to think about:
Walkability
If you’re bringing little ones or grandparents along for the session, it’s a good idea to choose a location with easy parking and a short, manageable walk. Avoid areas with rough terrain or long distances—especially if you’ll be hauling baby gear.
That said, if your family loves adventure and doesn’t mind a bit of a trek, a more remote, off-the-beaten-path location could be the perfect backdrop for your photos!
Lighting
This might not be on your radar, but it’s something your photographer definitely thinks about! Great lighting can make all the difference in how your photos turn out. That’s why it’s important to work with a photographer who knows how to choose the right location and find the best light once you’re there.
This is one of the reasons why I love shooting at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens — even in full, harsh sunlight — there are still plenty of beautiful spots with soft, flattering light.
Fees
Many public spaces in San Antonio charge a fee for you to do a photography session there, so it’s important to check before heading to locations like the botanical gardens. These fees are often the client’s responsibility, though I frequently split the cost with my clients.
It’s totally worth it to access those dreamy, picture-perfect backdrops!
Crowds
There are so many amazing spots around San Antonio for photo sessions—but it’s worth considering how crowded a location might be. Most people feel more relaxed in front of the camera when they’re not being watched, so I try to choose locations where we can have some space to ourselves.
If you’re set on a popular location, a weekday is usually better than a weekend, and avoiding holidays is a smart move. But even if we find ourselves in a busier area, don’t worry! I’m great at finding little nooks that make it look like we had the whole place to ourselves.
